At The Very Core of Being ...
06.15.08 (9:13 pm)   [edit]
Sadness. Grief and sorrow - not quite sadness, but almost, being the heart's rendering of that pain. Blake, Keats, Isaak Walton and Longellow are all quoted - yet it's the baby's first cry that clinches it all. "Why am I here?"

Sadness - we all experience it. Lovers know it. The poor may begrudge not having - yet the wealthy may be sad for the very having of it. One may gaze upon a sunset and yet know only his deepest sorrow. Another, amidst the joy of celebration feels only emptiness.

Sadness ... Sadness.

["from Out from Eden," by P.L. Travers; Parabola Vol. XI, No. 3]

I try not to let sadness enter my dwelling but sometimes it brings company and I have no choice but to let it in. Once in I serve it coffee, allow the tears to flow and gently escort him and his companion out the door.

It's so interesting that we're explicitly opposed to allowing sadness into our lives! If only we could *allow* it, perhaps it would change ...

Thanks for coming back, squirrel, you're so fine.

It's necessary and rooted to our existence. I used to be afraid of it, but I too invite it in for a cuppa and try to give it a hug. :)

Somehow I've a memory of responding to you already, Lindy. Strange.

No bother though, always fun to touch base - and you and Squirrel can sup tea with sadness, while showing it the door! Of course this is the obvious first step; the next step is to sit quietly with it, mindfully, and waiting for it to leave on its own. Small deviation, though I note that you're actually *hugging* it! One better than mine!!!

*wink* Helps it along its way to know it's welcome once in a while. :)

Ah yes indeed; and indeed most welcome! Though, a puzzling guest to be sure.
