Saddam Hussein hanged
12.30.06 (11:30 am)   [edit]
Today I'm horrified to hear on the radio that Iraq has (not surprisingly, I realize,) seen fit to deliver the poison of revenge to their people. Saddam Hussein has now been executed by hanging.

Oh, I know many are certain that this is an expression of justice served.

Who though, can claim the breadth, depth and extent of knowledge and understanding necessary to have the first clue about what Justice-Served even looks like?

More than once I've evoked Tolkien's poignant statement to Frodo who wished Bilbo had killed a beast when he had the opportunity:

"Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgment. For even the very wise cannot see all ends."

- J.R.R. Tolkien "The Fellowship of the Ring"

A very pertinent passage there, Andrea.. Especially as I have just heard Mr Bush say it is "an important milestone on Iraq's course to becoming a democracy that can govern, sustain, and defend itself, and be an ally in the War on Terror."

I'm rather dubious about the notion that state-sanctioned murder is one of the indicators of a decent democratic society.

Instead of the apalling "global war on terror", perhaps a different type of struggle, or jihad, might yield better results...

(Our) "enemies are not man. They are intolerance, fanaticism, dictatorship, cupidity, hatred and discrimination, which lie within the heart of man."

- Thich Nhat Hanh, 1966, in a letter to Martin Luther King, Jr.

p.s. your quote was originally spoken by me to Gandalf, who merely repeated it to Frodo, but took the credit. I used to get a bit annoyed when Gandalf did that- and he did it all the time- it's amazing the eagles ever came to help him out after all the stuff he plagiarised from them. But as he was the only one I could talk to, and he had a good sense of humor- besides I couldn't do much about it except kick and bite- I was happy the message got conveyed to Frodo, not matter the attribution.

No good will come of this. Saddam's death really doesn't solve anything.

Oh that we could give life to those who should be here with the ones who love them and with whom they love. Of course I'm no better judge of that than I am of who deserves to die. I only know what's in MY heart.

I can't concentrate on this today or ever really. It won't change a thing, just as his death doesn't change anything.

It's all sickening.

Wish I could figure out what causes that business: signed in vs *not* signed in!

Hey Bill - why am I not surprised to see your reply here? Hope you'll not hold my attributions here to fault - the sentiment does seem appropos, don' you think? You take care of your equine self, eh? - ak

You my friend, have my undying sympathy. Please forgive my raising unpleasant matters - I apologize bringing the stomach to turn so soon after the Christmas holiday.

Hey. I happen to know for a fact, that you are made for resistance against these ills!! Hang in there ...

Oh, please don't apologize. You are such a bright spot here. I'm just being a weenie ;)

Hang in there? Yeesh, I wonder what Freud would say about that comment..

Let's all smile today!

"Hang in there? Yeesh, I wonder what Freud would say about that comment.."

Oh boy - my own unconscious can be my worst enemy, always trying to out me in public!

There's a short bio for Freud online (freud-6.HTM, by someone named David) that suggests, "Eventually, Freud concluded that 'the aim of all life is death'" - so with that I'll give it a break!

You're right, morbidity never serves us terribly well. Fear not, I smile freuqently between my grousing!

Happy Day, Doeeyed. - ak

Although I generally don't agree with Christopher Hitchens, his commentary on this matter was informative. There always seem to be more to events than our leaders and their media want to tell us- it's at dub-dub-dub-dot-slate-dot-com id/2156776

I think Hitchens is on the money: Saddam was lynched, and the United States has reason to be ashamed.
